                 First Place for Writing

All Thanks to Books

By Rhonda McCormack

Move a muscle, rest the muscle, and that muscle will gain strength. Energize. Nurture. Grow. Sure, we get it. After all, action + recovery is the age-old athletic strategy that's crossed over to the mainstream. A self-care technique for everyone from CEOs to grandmas to grandmas who are CEOs. And Creatives use it, too. The trick, I find, is doing the things that energize and nurture. A walk in nature. An hour on the yoga mat. A stroll through a museum. A good night's sleep. All of them filling me up while soothing my aches—all of them inciting shifts and improvements.

And then there are books.

                                            I Have to Live

                               by Rachel Stones

When I started writing, I found discouraging statistics about the average number of years to publication. In THE TIPPING POINT, Malcolm Gladwell claims it takes ten thousand hours of practice for true expertise in any field. Never one to back down from a challenge, I figured I could shorten my road to success by putting in more hours and working harder. It worked in other aspects of life, wo why not in writing? I rearranged my schedule to allow more time to write. I joined social media sites and every writing group I stumbled across. I attended conferences, webinars, and I joined critique groups.

My alarm went off at 5:00 every morning so I could write for a couple of hours before the rest of the house stirred. I also wrote in little snippets throughout the day. And every night as my family settled in, I stayed up a few more hours to write. When I wasn't writing, I was reading. And often I was reading about writing.
